dr.calhoun@sportsscholarshipsusa.com

Graduating from Kennedy high school in Granada Hills, CA at 6’ 5” and 270lbs, Akili received a full football scholarship to the University of Hawaii. Akili received help from all-pro receiver Willy Gault, who gave a highlight film to head Coach Art Shell of the Los Angeles Raiders. Impressed with his ability as an athlete the Los Angeles Raiders picked him up in 1993. The Raiders allocated him to the European World League, Rheinfire for two years. He then caught the attention of the Indianapolis Colts, who picked him up. In spite of this great opportunity, the Raiders called him back. Akili spent two years on the player’s development squad and was activated in 1994 playing nose guard until 1996. His career came to an end when he was released due to a groin pull and a broken hand in 1996.
Leaving the professional football arena at 430lbs, Akili struggled with health issues, depression and the consequences of the financial mishandling of his hard work. No longer a celebrity, Akili found his calling working with juveniles and young adult males who were severely emotionally disturbed (SED) and exhibited detrimental behavioral outbursts. While simultaneously employed, Akili earned his Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. He continued on to earn a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and combined his education and professional experience working with SED males towards a career within the California penal system as a Clinical Psychologist.
